ATI TEAS 7 Test Guide
Updated October 26, 2026
The ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is an entrance exam many nursing and health science programs use to see whether applicants are ready for college-level coursework. This guide covers the current version, ATI TEAS 7: how it’s built, how it’s scored and how to prepare.
The sections
ATI TEAS 7 has 170 questions and 209 minutes of testing time.
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 45 | 55 minutes |
| Mathematics | 38 | 57 minutes |
| Science | 50 | 60 minutes |
| English and Language Usage | 37 | 37 minutes |
Twenty of the 170 questions are unscored pretest items, so 150 count toward your score. An on-screen calculator is provided for the math section.
What score do you need?
There’s no single passing score. ATI reports an Adjusted Individual Total Score and an academic preparedness level, and each school sets its own minimum. Programs are often competitive, so check the requirement for each one you apply to and aim above it.
How to take it
You can test in person at a school or a PSI testing center, or online with a remote proctor, depending on what your program accepts. You register through ATI. Check with ATI and your school for current fees, retake rules and which options they accept.
How hard is the TEAS?
Science is the section most people find hardest. It has the most questions, and its biggest part is human anatomy and physiology: the heart, lungs, nervous system, digestion and kidneys. English and Language Usage moves fastest, with about one minute per question.
How to study
If you have two weeks: take a full practice test, then spend most of your time on Science, especially anatomy and physiology, and on whichever other section scored lowest.
If you have four to six weeks: study one body system every few days for Science, review math (fractions, percents, ratios, conversions and basic algebra) and grammar and punctuation for English, then take full timed practice tests in the last week.
