Practice passage
Hand hygiene is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infections in hospitals. Even so, studies have found that health care workers clean their hands far less often than guidelines recommend. Busy shifts, skin irritation from frequent washing and the belief that gloves are enough all contribute.
Many hospitals now place alcohol-based hand rub dispensers at the entrance to every patient room. Hand rub works faster than soap and water and is gentler on the skin. However, it does not remove some germs, such as the spores of Clostridioides difficile, so soap and water are still required in those cases.
